Being “Gay” In A Christian Home

My brother is gay.unnamed I’m pansexual. Our family are devout Christians. What could go wrong?

When my brother and I came to terms with our sexual identity, we vowed to never tell our parents. We were under the impression that they would hate us and kick us out of the house or worse, tell us that we could pray the “gay” away. We successfully hid our sexuality from them and thought that everything would be nice and okay as long as they never found out for two years. And then our mom was confronted by someone who knew my brother and told her that she was so sorry that her son was gay.

Don’t get me wrong, she was pissed. She came home and chewed us out for anything and everything she could think of until she finally told us what was really going on. But, she wasn’t mad at us. For the most part. She still doesn’t agree with our “lifestyle” and our dad still makes the occasional joke about not having any grandchildren but they still love us.

They pray for us every night, that we’ll meet someone who will love us and take care of us and that we’ll be watched over when they aren’t there. They defend us from the harsh words of strangers and help us sort out our lives when we don’t know what to do. They’re still our parents. They didn’t decide that they didn’t love us anymore and kick us to the curb. They still love us, and I think a lot of so-called “Christian” families could take a lesson or two from them.

Love doesn’t mean you have to support everything they do, it just means that you have to be there to catch them if it doesn’t work out in the end.

  1. I super like the last line of this: “Love doesn’t mean you have to support everything they do, it just means you have to catch them if it doesn’t work out in the end.” Baller line for Christians to follow.
